University of Melbourne: Melbourne Stories
Helping Australia’s No. 1 University make a great first impression.
The Challenge - Introducing the University of Melbourne to the world
The University of Melbourne approached Hive to create a small keepsake for university ambassadors to share on their travels around the world.
It needed to show the real essence of the university and speak to its achievements in a down-to-earth tone.
The Insight - Story telling is a universal language
The Approach - Creating a cover that cuts-through the noise
The cover of Melbourne Stories needed to speak to the past and present of the University and tell a story that represents it well.
We chose the story of Diane Lemaire, an Australian aeronautical engineer who became the first woman to graduate from the University of Melbourne with a degree in engineering in 1942.
We complemented that with an example of the same department breaking new ground in the present with students who are revolutionising the satellite industry.
The Solution - A great first impression
Using a laser cut illustration technique, coupled with a double-layered, heavyweight cover, Hive created a sophisticated layering effect that was the perfect introduction to Melbourne’s première university.
The cover featured the silhouette of Diane Lemaire, the satellite dishes used by the modern engineering students, and some iconic university architecture in the background to give the design a strong sense of place.
Inside, the booklet Hive developed a series of fold-out sections to keep the reader surprised and engaged from cover to cover.
The Impact
Booklet: Engaging covers designed with optimal cut-through to make a lasting first impression that inspires and delights.
Internal: A novel approach to storytelling designed to help University ambassadors share the real, authentic stories of students, past and present.
Presentation: Supported by a robust design system that makes it easy to keep on sharing new stories across all University departments.
Students: Authentic images of students, taken by the students themselves created connective and engaging booklets that could introduce even the most senior stakeholders to the University of Melbourne.
