University of Melbourne: Melbourne Stories

Helping Australia’s No. 1 University make a great first impression.

The Challenge - Introducing the University of Melbourne to the world

The University of Melbourne approached Hive to create a small keepsake for university ambassadors to share on their travels around the world.

It needed to show the real essence of the university and speak to its achievements in a down-to-earth tone.

The Insight - Story telling is a universal language

Every culture uses storytelling to gain a deeper understanding of the world.

We decided to use that technique to help people from any background connect with the University of Melbourne. This led us to research print and design techniques from storybooks that could be used to engage the imaginations of our readers.

To tell the authentic stories of real, individual students, we decided to use photography that students themselves had taken.

We searched through social media and found positive, day-to-day moments of students researching in the field, travelling around the world, and making lifelong friendships while learning. These images were mostly sourced from students posting with the hashtag #unimelb.

The Approach - Creating a cover that cuts-through the noise

The cover of Melbourne Stories needed to speak to the past and present of the University and tell a story that represents it well.

We chose the story of Diane Lemaire, an Australian aeronautical engineer who became the first woman to graduate from the University of Melbourne with a degree in engineering in 1942.

We complemented that with an example of the same department breaking new ground in the present with students who are revolutionising the satellite industry.

The Solution - A great first impression

Using a laser cut illustration technique, coupled with a double-layered, heavyweight cover, Hive created a sophisticated layering effect that was the perfect introduction to Melbourne’s première university.

The cover featured the silhouette of Diane Lemaire, the satellite dishes used by the modern engineering students, and some iconic university architecture in the background to give the design a strong sense of place.

Inside, the booklet Hive developed a series of fold-out sections to keep the reader surprised and engaged from cover to cover.

The Impact

The booklets were so well received that other faculties wanted their own versions. This led us to create a style-guided system for producing future additions.

“The booklets developed by Hive are just beautiful. They’re the perfect introduction to our story and have met the brief in engaging the diversity of stakeholders we are trying to reach.” – Caroline Strong, Associate Director, Communications and Marketing, The University of Melbourne.
